SMARTlab at the UCD Summer School Engineering Challenge

Forty-two students from all over Ireland attended a Squishy Circuits challenge, facilitated by The SMARTlab on 7 June 2012 as part of UCD’s Engineering Summer School Challenge 2012.

The Summer School Challenge was designed to give potential students an insight into life as a UCD Engineering student. Squishy Circuits was the first Engineering Challenge of the day and the accessible art/science workshop, facilitated by the CATALYST team at SMARTlab, explored basic electronic circuits using conductive and insulating play dough.

Then came the test – the scrap heap challenge – as participants applied what they had learned to make functional ‘sculptural’ circuits from the resources provided: motors, fans, wires, LEDs, batteries and, of course, play dough.

Special thanks to Postgrad volunteers Ciaran Courtney, Robert Dowdall, Eduardo Galeazzo and Ashley Humenik; UCD Student Ambassadors; Karina O’Neill, Marketing Manager, UCD School of Engineering and Architecture; and Sinead Kerins, Section Head, Laboratory, Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering.
