Tom Meskell

Artist in Residence (Fine Art/Painting)

Biography

A fine artist and arts facilitator, Tom has painted the canvases that epitomise the SMARTlab ethos of HOPE and TRUST, working on projects aimed at positive social transformation through art, design and media. His works appear in digital format on SMARTlab web sites, and also often feature in Kíla performances and other live gigs. Tom has worked with many media, and is renowned for his ability to work as a coordinator to create group artwork. He is currently developing a series of painted images inspired by digital realities and the connection with an artistic tradition. Tom interned with Don Sunseri and Michael Gray as part of the GRACE programme in 1998; this has helped him to develop a methodology in working with people who are living in institutional settings. Tom has been working in care settings in County Mayo since 2004, facilitating arts workshops and organising exhibitions and events with participants of his art programmes. He is currently Artist in Residence at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, as well as at SMARTlab. Tom also acts as a mentor and has been key in developing arts and health programmes such as Anam Beo in County Offaly and the Drumsna Residency in County Leitrim.
