Cathy is a pioneering, Irish dance artist whose work explores issues of relevance to people’s lives. She has developed a distinctive dance vocabulary and discourse around her commitment to bringing the art of dance and the ‘normal’ into close association with one another, constantly testing the boundaries of relations between self, art form, media, and community. A native of Wexford town, Cathy completed her professional dance training in Copenhagen, having studied classical ballet. She completed her dance teacher training to professional level in London and Liverpool. Her early work in Community and Dance in Education contexts led her to the study of movement analysis, and this work has helped to define her unique approach to her people-based processes and philosophy. Cathy is the founder and artistic director of Fluxusdance based in Co Kildare. She served as Dance Artist in Residence at Wexford Arts Centre where she developed groundbreaking initiatives for professional dance practice in Ireland including her work with Barefoot Dance Company and Barefoot Youth Dance Company. Cathy is the originator of Counterbalance Integrated Dance Group and is their current project director and choreographer. Her career has brought her a number of awards including the Sunday Tribune Arts Award for her pioneering work with Barefoot Dance Company and the Award for E-Creativity from the World Summit on the Information Society in 2003, for her work with Counterbalance and SMARTlab. Cathy has been Dance Artist in Residence at The Beckett Centre, Trinity College Dublin, with Kildare County Council Arts Office and with Dublin City Arts Office.
